Yes, some idiots will think it's the greatest night ever, spend too much on tuxedo/limo rentals, and waste days contemplating which date to take.
I feel that since you already recognize the foolishness of prom, it's the perfect opportunity to be thrifty, have a good night out with a few close friends (and a whole bunch of other graduates) and not make a big deal out of it.

to be honest i said i'd go to prom at my school based on the fact that it was like the final meet-up for my form class, but then i realised you had to dress up, and you had to make some serious effort just to drag a smart clothes concept into a completely casual school life.
And i'm not sure i like it.
